Hyponatremic seizure following ECT.

This report describes the investigation of a spontaneous grand mal seizure in a 55-year old woman, being treated with drugs and ECT for depression. The spontaneous seizure was due to hyponatremia caused by self-induced water intoxication, although psychotrophic medication may have contributed by lowering the seizure threshold. The diagnosis of hyponatremia is discussed.

ECT Seizure Duration : Database Information

Aim: In this naturalistic study the aim was to examine the impact on seizure duration of stimulus intensity, previous treatments (during the first course of ECT), age, gender, and electrode placement. Method: The database of the ECT Service of the Royal Hobart Hospital was examined for the 15 years ending in 2010. First courses of ECT were identified in which the stimulus intensity was not alte...

Limitations of Motor Seizure Monitoring in Ect

Seizures were monitored using both cuff method and EEG, during the first ECT session in 158 consecutive patients. All developed adequate EEG seizures (≥25 seconds). Twelve patients (8%) did not develop adequate motor seizures (15 seconds), of whom ten had no convulsive response. EEG seizure duration was less than 120 seconds in 117 patients (Group-A) and 120 or more seconds (prolonged) in the r...

Effect of hyperventilation on seizure length during electroconvulsive therapy.

Hyperventilation reportedly prolongs the seizures during eletroconvulsive therapy (ECT) (Bridenbaugh et al. 1972; Holmberg 1953; Holmberg et al. 1956; Weiner 1979; Chater and Simpson 1988). As these studies did not measure the pCO2 concentration it is unclear if prolongation of seizures was due to hyperoxygenation or hypocapnia. In a controlled study Bergsholm et al. (1984) demonstrated an incr...

Seizure threshold in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) II. The anticonvulsant effect of ECT.

To measure the anticonvulsant effects of a course of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), we used a flexible stimulus dosage titration procedure to estimate seizure threshold at the first and sixth ECT treatments in 62 patients with depression who were undergoing a course of brief pulse, constant current ECT given at moderately suprathreshold stimulus intensity. Seizure threshold increased by appro...
